This report presents the results from testing Device Seizure, version 4.0, against the Smart Phone Tool Text Assertions and Test Plan, available at the Computer Forensics Tool Testing (CFTT) Web site.

Abstract

The report's first of five sections summarizes the results of the test runs and is sufficient for most readers to assess the suitability of the tool for the intended use. Two of the remaining sections provide justification for the selection of test cases and assertions from the set of possible cases defined in the test plan for smart phone forensic tools. The test cases are generally selected based on features offered by the tool. Another section lists the hardware and software used to run the test cases, and the concluding section describes each test case, test assertions used in the test case, the expected result, and the actual result. Except for the 16 unsuccessful test cases noted, the tested tool acquired all supported data objects completely and accurately for the selected test mobile devices (i.e., iPhone 3Gs, Blackberry Bold 9700, Nokia 6790, HTC Touch Pro 2, Blackberry 9630, Samsung Moment, and Palm pixi). The 16 exceptions involved failed test cases of various types with the aforementioned test mobile devices. The test case number is provided for each failed test, along with the nature of the failure, and the involved device.
