Chapter 1. Overview of Domestic Violence

Section 3 — What time of day does domestic violence occur?

According to the NCVS, most offenses (60 percent) occur between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. at the victim's home. [27]

Implications for Law Enforcement

Although all potential responding law enforcement officers must be trained and prepared to deal with domestic violence, if the agency has only a limited number of victim advocates, related auxiliary personnel, or volunteers to assist on domestic violence calls, priority should be given to the 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. time period.
