Advancing Forensic DNA Analysis to Improve Sexual Assault Investigations

Forensic DNA research and development and increasingly advanced testing technology has made it possible to obtain results from ever smaller samples of DNA. Forensic R&D is also making is possible to extend the length of time that is suitable for collecting viable DNA samples in sexual assault cases.

NIJ has funded a multitude of projects on Y chromosome DNA testing and on sperm detection and separation. This work is improving sexual assault investigations by helping forensic laboratory analysts overcome long-standing hurdles, such as the inability to obtain a male profile when, as is often the case in sexual assault investigations, female cells vastly outnumber sperm cells.
