The ability of public safety officers to share information quickly and efficiently both within and between agencies is critical to ensuring public safety. NIJ helps agencies meet these needs through its commitment to the research, development, implementation and evaluation of communications technologies and of the policies needed to support them.
NIJ's communications technologies research program provides criminal justice and public safety agencies with tools to facilitate interoperable voice communications; effective and efficient information sharing; and high bandwidth, low-cost communications. Specific areas of interest include software-defined radio, information assurance, information sharing and analysis, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
NIJ also funds policy-based projects that enable cross-agency and cross-jurisdictional communication, particularly in the areas of interoperability, resource sharing and coordination, and standardizing the use of plain language in radio communications.
