Date Published
February 19, 2013

The Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act[1] created an Attorney General appointed Federal Advisory Task Force on Violence Against Indian Women in 2008. The task force is managed by DOJ's Office on Violence Against Women. Task force members include representatives from tribal governments, national tribal domestic and sexual violence nonprofit organizations, and other national tribal organizations. Members convene during their two-year appointments to provide guidance to NIJ on this program of research.

The task force meets at least once a year during members' two-year appointment tenure. Task force members[2] are expected to:

  • Provide feedback on research and evaluation findings from studies conducted on violence against American Indian and Alaska Native women.
  • Assist with recommendations resulting from study findings.
  • Provide feedback on the program's priorities.
  • Assist in developing new research questions to be addressed.
  • Provide feedback on research design strategies.
  • Provide feedback on research and evaluation protocol issues.
  • Provide a summary of the group's activities and recommendations by the end of each task force's term.
